One of the first settlers was Thomas Powell who arrived in 1687 from Europe. Thomas purchased a 15 square mile piece of land from local native American tribes which includes what is now known as Farmingdale.

For many years the town of Farmingdale has celebrated its founders day with the annual Hardscrabble fair which includes food, music, and games. The festival is normally held in late spring around the month of May.

Farmingdale is known for an 18 hole private golf course designed by Devereux Emmett, a famous golf course design architect. The golf course was eventually purchased by the state of New York and expanded with even more design work that led the course to be inducted into the world Golf Hall of Fame.
