The son of New York City Mayor Matthias Nicoll became a patentee in the 1680s of the east end of what is now the Town of Islip. He then named his home estate Islip after the Nicolls ancestral home in East Northampton shire, England.

The hamlet has it’s on public bathing beach with boating and yachting very popular with the development of communities on the adjacent barrier beach of Fire Island.

Islip was originally a farming community that slowly transformed into a hamlet for wealthy families in the 19th century and beyond. The community has a long history associated with boating, swimming, fishing, and clamming. The world famous Doxsee Clam Company originated in Islip.
