Brookville was incorporated as a village in 1931, originally centered along Cedar Swamp Road. Later that decade, it expanded by annexing part of the former Wheatley Hills area to the north. Long before incorporation, the area had deep agricultural roots — known in the 19th century as Tappentown, after a prominent local family. Early Dutch settlers called it Wolver Hollow, as wolves often gathered near Shoo Brook, a spring-fed stream that runs through the area.
