One of the oldest English settlements in New York, Southampton traces its roots back to the 1600s. The first meeting house once stood on the hill where Southampton Hospital now operates, and the town’s oldest existing home — the Halsey House — was built by Thomas Halsey, one of the early English traders with the Shinnecock people.
Southampton has long been tied to the Shinnecock Indian Nation, whose reservation borders the town. In 2005, the Shinnecock filed a lawsuit seeking the return of thousands of acres and compensation for colonial-era land seizures — a reminder of the region’s complex and living history.
